The American Academy of Pediatrics says there’s a strong scientific consensus that the mineral powder used in some products is not safe to consume.
“The main risk is from the mineral powders that we use in our products,” said Dr. Rebecca Smith, the group’s executive director.
“We believe that if we can be more proactive about protecting ourselves from these types of contaminants, then we can reduce the number of people who are going to have to have this issue.”
Primark, a division of DuPont, is one of the biggest makers of preservatives and ingredients in the U.S.
The company says it uses a variety of chemicals, from phenol to benzene, to maintain its brand’s reputation.
But critics say the company uses the ingredients without proper labeling.
In a statement to the Associated Press, a DuPont spokesperson said, “We are not going to speculate on a company’s safety measures.
We are taking every precaution to protect our customers and the environment from the potential effects of these chemicals.”
The FDA is now considering a ban on the use of primark in baby products.
The group says that’s not enough, and is calling on the FDA to take action on the issue.
“There’s an urgent need to protect the health of babies, including pregnant women, who are at risk from the preservative-based products that they use,” Smith said.
